Via Malta Song 2012. 24 inzendingen werd geselecteerd voor de halve finale. Die vond plaats op vrijdag 3 februari. 16 kandidaten plaatsten zich voor de finale op 4 februari, waar via een televoting en vakjury een winnaar werd aangeduid.

De singer-songwriter Kurt Calleja werd op 5 mei 1989 geboren.

Calleja begon zijn carrière als backing vocal in een tv-show. Het was de opstap naar een ander tv-station waar hij een programma kreeg. Tegenwoordig is hij te gast als zanger in meerdere tv-shows, zoals Vespri (dinsdagochtend op Favourite Channel) en Hadd Ghalik (zondagvoormiddag op TVM).

Gedurende één jaar trad Kurt Calleja op in clubs in Londen. Hij waagde die gok nadat hij vier jaar werd begeleid door Brian Cefai.

Kurt Calleja heeft al twee keer eerder deelgenomen aan Maltasong. In 2010 trad hij in duo aan met Priscilla Psaila. Samen zongen ze 'Waterfall'. Vorig jaar zong Calleja solo 'Over and over', dat hij samen schreef met de Zweed Johann Jamtberg, met wie hij ook 'This is the night' heeft geschreven. Vorig jaar eindigde Kurt Calleja derde tijdens Maltasong. Het nummer verscheen op 16 maart 2011 als single. De release gebeurde in de Barcelona Lounge te Paceville.

• Tweevoudig songfestivaldeelnemer Fabrizio Faniello (ESF 01-06) waagde opnieuw zijn kans in de Maltese voorronde. Ook zijn zus Claudia nam deel. Zij eindigde tweede met het nummer 'Pure'.
• In de Maltese voorronde zat een nummer van Vlaamse makelij. 'You make me go uh uh' werd gecomponeerd door David Vervoort (de man achter 'Dos cervezas') en Patrick Renier, die zijn sporen verdiende als sterke man achter Belle Perez. De Maltese Deborah C zong het nummer samen met de Vlaamse Leila James, alias Liz Verbruggen. Zij is de zus van Code 37-regisseur Jacob Verbruggen en het nichtje van Herman Verbruggen, beter bekend als Markske in F.C. De Kampioenen.
